De positie van de beeldende kunstenaar vandaag, in Vlaanderen, is arbitrair en onvoorspelbaar. Hoe deze bijzondere positie te benaderen? Wat kunnen de krachtlijnen zijn van een adequaat kunstenaarsbeleid? Hoe staan kunstenaars, kunstenorganisaties en musea hier tegenover?

De beeldende kunstenaars staan aan de basis van de hedendaagse kunstproductie en toch worden ze in het gehanteerde kunstenbeleid al te vaak de dupe van een overgeadministreerde aanpak.

NICC, M HKA en VOBK buigen zich samen met kunstenaars, critici en verzamelaars over enkele prangende en actuele vragen. Over kunstenaars en erfgoed, over kunstenaars en het internationale en over kunstenaars en respect van sector en beleid.

KunstenNoord.net is het interdisciplinair netwerk van verschillende kunstenorganisaties opererend vanuit het noorden van Antwerpen. Dit netwerk wil Antwerpen-Noord als een culturele buurt op de kaart zetten en de kenmerkende diversiteit als een troef uitspelen.

Op zaterdag 28 en zondag 29 mei vieren de leden van KunstenNoord.net feest. Omdat ze elkaar gevonden hebben.

Tijdens dat weekend worden, onder het motto Open NOORD, alle registers opengetrokken. De
leden van KunstenNoord laten u voor de gelegenheid het achterste van hun tong en alle hoeken en kanten van hun atelier, centrum, galerij, zaal zien.

Coinciding with the exhibition “A syntax of dependency” (03.FEB-22.MAY.11), presented by M HKA as an artistic and discursive dialogue between the two New York-based artists Liam Gillick and Lawrence Weiner, NICC will be organising an artists talk with Liam Gillick moderated by Nicolaus Schafhausen.

Together with artists such as Rirkrit Tiravanija and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Gillik is often defined as being involved with the group of artists for whom Nicolas Bourriaud coined the term, Relational Aesthetics. In 2002, Gillick was nominated for the annual Turner Prize. Gillick's artistic output is characterized by the use of text and the diversity of his media (architecture, sculpture, graphic design, film and music). His artworks are often designed as spaces for open social interaction whose actual meaning are to be constantly redefined within the situation of the exhibition.

The curator Nicolaus Schafhausen was born in 1965 in Düsseldorf. Since 2006 he is the artistic and financial director of Witte de With, Center for Contemporary art in Rotterdam. in 2009 he selected Liam Gillick as first non-German artist for the German Pavilion Venice Biennale. Sharing an affinity with Gillick’s practices, he examines art practice often in relation to contemporary social-political issues.

NICC nodigt het netwerk van creatieve geesten van Scheld'Apen uit om gebruik te maken van de NICC-tentoonstellingsruimte als platform voor een talige en beeldende confrontatie met de beeldende kunsten(aars).

De tentoonstelling, het randprogramma en de publicatie worden samengesteld door
Lieven Segers, Kati Heck, Dennis Tyfus en Michèle Matyn.

Meer dan 70 jonge en gevestigde kunstenaars zegden toe om via de creatie van een individueel werk (een pop)bij te dragen aan één totaalproductie.

Het ICC wordt in 1969 opgericht nadat kunstenaars tijdens hun bezetting van het KMSKA in 1968 gewezen hadden op de dringende noodzaak van een permanente plaats voor hedendaagse kunst in Antwerpen (VAGA-brief aan koning Boudewijn I van september 1968). Minister Van Mechelen ging op deze gedachte verder wanneer hij het 18de-eeuwse Koninklijk Paleis op de Meir, dat in 1969 door de koninklijke familie werd ‘afgestaan’ aan het Ministerie van Nederlandse Cultuur, de naam Internationaal Cultureel Centrum gaf. Tussen 1970 en de definitieve sluiting in 1998 vonden er honderden tentoonstellingen, concerten, performance- en filmvoorstellingen plaats. In de jaren ’70 groeide het ICC uit tot een broedplaats van de internationale avant-garde: conceptuele kunst, performance- en videokunst behoorden ondermeer tot de core-business. In een periode dat België geen musea voor hedendaagse kunst kende, was het ICC het eerste officiële platform voor de meest actuele kunstuitingen.

Toen het ICC Koninklijk Paleis dichtging in 1998 werd het niet meer gebruikt voor tentoonstellingen en trokken er administratieve diensten van de stad in. De Vlaamse Gemeenschap gaf de bevoegdheid aan Erfgoed Vlaanderen dat een "grondige en toekomstgerichte" restauratie van 2004 tot 2010 doorvoerde.
Het Koninklijk Paleis is nu in de toekomst beland: er huist een chocolaterie en een Café Impérial in.

ICC heropent als chocolaterie

Op 2 februari 1998 werd het ICC gedurende 10 dagen bezet door de actiegroep Hit&Run, uit protest tegen de plannen van de Vlaamse Regering om dit icoon van hedendaagse kunst te sluiten.

Het ICC werd door wijlen Koning Boudewijn, alweer na een toendertijds protest van kunstenaars, in 1970 'aan de kunstenaars geschonken' met de garantie dat de culturele bestemming van het gebouw gehandhaafd zou worden.

Op 27 maart 2010 zal het ICC echter heropend worden als chocolaterie/brasserie.

In 1963 riep Fluxuskunstenaar Robert Filliou zijn verjaardag uit tot de officiële geboortedag van de ‘kunst’. Dit statement in een Parijse bar groeide uit tot diverse Art’s Birthday feesten wereldwijd. Het NICC, Klara,HART en het M HKA slaan de handen in elkaar voor een feest ter ere van de kunst. Het kunstenaarscollectief NICC presenteert met de tentoonstelling “New Kids on the Block” zes beloftevolle jonge kunstenaars, die elk vanuit hun eigen artistieke praktijk een nieuw licht werpen op de recente ontwikkelingen binnen de hedendaagse kunst in België, Nederland en de regio Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Uit deze regio’s werden zeventien opkomende kunstenaars geselecteerd door Katharina Fritsch (GER), Manuel Klappe (NL), Carina Plath (GER), Philippe Van Cauteren (BE), Gert Verhoeven (BE) en Henk Visch (NL).

Hieruit koos de jury van NICC en Extra City de kunstenaars Fia Cielen (BE), Theresa Frölich (GER), Benjamin Greber (GER), Frank Koolen (NL), Adrien Lucca (BE) en Renée Van Trier (NL).

Binnen het kader van deze tentoonstelling wil NICC i.s.m. Vlaams-Nederlands Huis deBuren de aandacht vestigen op de moeilijkheden waarmee jonge kunstenaars worden geconfronteerd aan het begin van hun carrière.

In een reeks van 3 panelgesprekken “How to start?, on the difficulties encountered at the beginning of a young artist’s career” wordt de problematiek vanuit verschillende hoeken benaderd, met nationale en internationale kunstenaars en vooraanstaande gastsprekers uit de galeriewereld, de instellingen, het kunstonderwijs en de overheid.

"Volgens een, begin dit jaar verschenen, Europees rapport is cultuur de tweede belangrijkste economische sector van dit continent. De metaalindustrie bekleedt de eerste plaats. Beeldende kunst zou op de zevende plaats staan." Zo zwengelt kunstenaar Jan Van Imschoot het debat aan in zijn pamflet 'Kunst als economische sector'.

Niet veel later maakte senator Jean-Jacques De Gucht zijn cultuurbeleidstekst 'Een blauwe culturele lente' bekend.

Adriaan Raemdonck is galeriehouder van De Zwarte Panter en voorzitter van BUP en FEAGA (respectievelijk de Belgische en internationale beroepsvereniging van de galerieën). Hij pleit al jaren voor maatregelen om de kunst als economische sector aan te zwengelen.

Op donderdagavond 26 februari zullen zij hun visie op kunst als economische sector toelichten. Senator De Gucht zal ook uitgebreid stilstaan bij zijn beleidsvoorstel om de tax shelter uit te breiden naar andere culturele sectoren. NICC nodigt je uit dit gesprek bij te wonen of er aan deel te nemen. De gespreksavond wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met Extra City.

Friday 16th of january, the NICC celebrates Art's Birthday at the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp MUHKA with FREE DRINKS and YOU TUBE STREAMING.
Art's Birthday is an annual event first proposed in 1963 by French artist ROBERT FILLIOU.

He suggested that 1,000,000 years ago, there was no art. But one day, on the 17th of January to be precise, Art was born. According to Filliou, it happened when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water. Modest beginnings, but look at us now.

Filliou proposed a PUBLIC HOLIDAY to CELEBRATE the presence of art in our lives. In recent years, the idea has been taken up by a loose network of ARTISTS AND FRIENDS AROUND THE WORLD.

The exhibition Strategies of Confidence is set up around the topic of credibility. This term comes out of the specific context of communication sciences and sociology.

Erving Goffmann was a sociologist who gave credibility a very significant meaning within the presentation of the self in everyday life, especially in the conversations between the individual and the other(s). In this communication the individual always tries to define the situation. He tries to control the reaction of the other(s) to whom he’s talking. The individual always insinuates a promising character: it is continuously reflecting to things that are not there in the same time. This means the others are obliged to trust him and to consider these things as being true. In this way they can react properly on what is said.

The communication of the individual happens on two levels: the first is the verbal communication and the second is communication through the body which is not always controllable. Credibility grows when the individual is able to control as good as possible these two levels of communication. The other(s) tend to only consider something true when checked with the most uncontrollable for the individual: expression.

For this exhibition four video artists are invited. It’s not a coincidence that they all work with video. This medium makes the presentation of reality possible in a very clear way. Bram Crevits is working with YouTubevideo’s. Ilke De Vries and Saskia Holmkvist are working with the genre of documentary. Julika Rudelius approaches video as a way to show the uncontrollable and the unspeakable.

All these different ways of communication are fully represented in the exhibition. The artist is observing, documenting and making important visual and intrinsic decisions. The artist interferes and a new level of communication originates, next to the textual and the corporal. The protagonists tell a story that gets a new meaning through the view of the artists.

The credibility of the protagonists is tested by the artists through the relation between the different layers of communication. This dialectic is inside all of us. That means that the visitor will test the trustworthiness from the piece of art and it’s environment: in this case an exhibition about credibility.

Under the new directorship of Guillaume Bijl, Koen van den Broek, Wim Catrysse, Rinus Van De Velde, Wim Waelput, Nathalie Hunter, Lode Geens, and Timothy Seger, the NICC chose the Tulpstraat as a location to extend their exhibition and lecture activities. The brand new exhibition space of the NICC is connected with Extra City, Centrum voor Hedendaagse Kunst, through a bridge that spans the Tulpstraat and that belongs to the former industrial complex.
